Superintendent official Darryl Dillard reported three recent events to connect juniors and seniors with post‑secondary and career options: a Sept. 22 college fair with about 686 students, a Sept. 25 career expo at Terrebonne General Health System, and a week‑long set of manufacturing facility tours.
Darryl Dillard, supervisor of secondary education, told the committee the district recently held three events aimed at college and career exploration for juniors and seniors.
On Sept. 22 the district held its annual college fair at the Civic Center, where Dillard said more than 40 institutions and vendors attended and roughly 686 juniors and seniors from the four local high schools participated. Attendees spoke with representatives about scholarships, GPA requirements and program options.
On Sept. 25 Terrebonne General Health System hosted a career expo, Dillard said, bringing about 15 seniors from each high school to tour the facility and learn about healthcare careers including pharmacy, IT, HVAC and other roles. Dillard said Terrebonne General is considering a job‑shadowing program as a follow‑up.
During the week of October, Dillard said 20 students per high school visited local manufacturing companies such as Cajun Cutters, Hunting Energy Services, CoreTech and John Deere to learn about careers, education requirements and benefits.
Board members asked how students were selected and whether opportunities were capped; Dillard said host sites set maximums and schools polled for student interest. He also said the district does not currently track long‑term post‑graduation outcomes beyond graduation and that systems to do so may not be in place.
Dillard characterized the events as successful opportunities to connect local employers with students exploring both college and career paths.
