Quincy council adopts higher survivor payment for disabled retirees

The Quincy City Council on Oct. 6 approved a recommendation from the Quincy Retirement Board to raise the survivor death benefit for disabled retirees, increasing the payment from $550 to $750 per month under a change allowed by a 2010 special act.
Mr. Walker, the mayor’s representative, told the council the retirement board, through executive director Brad Kroll, recommended the change. He described the history: before 1996 the survivor death benefit for disability pensioners was $550 per month; a 2010 special act allowed municipalities to raise that payment to $750. Mr. Walker said the retirement board voted unanimously to recommend implementing the higher amount.
Councilor Dave McCarthy made the motion to accept the retirement board’s recommendation; Councilor Lang seconded. A roll call recorded nine ayes and no opposing votes, and the order passed 9–0.
The action accepts the retirement board’s recommendation and directs implementation of the higher supplemental monthly allowance for survivors of disabled pensioners, consistent with the limits allowed by the 2010 special act.
