El Mirage Library to install 'bookworm' rock art as part of summer reading program

Library staff presented a Bookworm Rock Art collaboration at the May 20 council meeting that will engage summer reading program participants in decorating rocks to be placed in landscaping at the El Mirage Library and at the YMCA.
The presenter said all program supplies will be provided by the library and that the city will maintain landscaping oversight and assist with promotion. Participants may choose to place their decorated rocks at the library or at the YMCA; the library also will offer take-home packets for families and will host reading sessions certain Saturdays during the summer. The presenter mentioned June 7 as a target date for related activities and said program information will be posted in the library lobby.
Staff described the project as a low-cost community engagement effort intended to encourage summer reading among children and families; no council action or funding request was recorded during the presentation.
