Talbot County unveils "Portrait of a Graduate" video to anchor strategic plan

Dr. B. and Talbot County Public Schools staff presented a student‑centered video of the district's Portrait of a Graduate during the board work session on Aug. 18, showing how students describe the skills the district intends graduates to demonstrate.
The short video features students describing attributes such as critical thinking, responsibility, respect, adaptability, teamwork, empowerment and pride. Staff said the Portrait of a Graduate is an essential component of the district's strategic plan through 2029 and will be used in communications and at school events during the year.
Dr. Horsey and a small production team that included Debbie Gardner, Devin Beck and Sarah Claglin wrote a script and worked with families and students to reflect student voice. Staff emphasized that the video was designed to convey what students value and to make the strategic plan language accessible to the school community.
Board members praised the students' ownership of the project and suggested periodic check‑ins to see how the portrait relates to students' experiences over time. One board member asked for a future presentation on how civics education is taught (noting civics is taught in tenth grade) so the district can align curricular approaches with the civic element of the portrait.
Staff said the portrait will be referenced at opening day and revisited across the year; the board discussed following up in later years to measure how graduates reflect the portrait's attributes.
