Assembly passes corrections oversight bill after extended floor debate over staffing, costs and timing

The Assembly passed an omnibus corrections and public-safety package on June 13 that sponsors and many advocates described as a first step toward addressing a string of deaths and allegations of abuse in state correctional facilities. The measure bundles several reforms: expedited reporting of deaths in custody to the state’s Office of the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations (OSI); new requirements for fixed camera coverage in state facilities and longer retention for footage tied to misconduct allegations; expanded duties and appointment structure for the State Commission on Correction; and a limited tolling provision allowing people who were harmed while incarcerated to start certain civil claims after release.
