Parks and Recreation Director Rick Meyer told the council the city will hold a ribbon cutting for the Creighton Park playground at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17.
Meyer said the Greenway was closed after a recent storm until crews could clean and inspect it and that the city will adopt a policy of temporarily closing the Greenway after similar storms until it is inspected for safety. He said the Old Town Preservation Association sought contractor bids for Living History Park repairs after storm damage; the city has filed claims with the South Carolina Municipal Insurance and is working with FEMA and the association to review quotes and move toward construction.
Tourism Manager Carl Walhau said a trolley unveiling and ribbon cutting will occur Thursday, June 19, at 4 p.m. at the corner of Carolina and Jackson avenues; the city also plans historical markers at the trolley stop that reference local trolley service circa 1909–1920. Walhau said the trolley is being prioritized for city-sponsored events and third-Thursday programming while the city brings additional trolleys to full service.
Council members asked about small park maintenance and whether pocket parks like Curtis Park warrant additional investment. Meyer said playground equipment at Curtis Park is old and may need removal or replacement and that larger investments are prioritized at Creighton, Leroy Hammond and Riverview parks.
