District recommends new English language development textbooks; board to consider adoption

District administrators told trustees Tuesday that the current English language development (formerly ESL) materials for grades 6–12 are more than a decade old, misaligned with current Michigan standards and the WIDA state assessment, and lack sufficient adaptable resources.
A district committee reviewed and piloted candidate materials over the year and recommended the National Geographic LIFT program and the Great Writing Series (various editions 2020–2025) as replacements. The presentation said the total estimated cost from the general fund is $31,684.40 and includes teacher materials, student books and digital resources.
Administration said the recommendation was endorsed by curriculum leadership and that a motion to adopt the textbook resources will be presented to the board at an upcoming meeting to allow trustees and community members additional time to review samples. Staff invited trustees to preview materials at the Educational Services Center this summer; the district plans to order materials in August so schools can receive them before the fall semester.
No formal adoption vote occurred at this meeting.
