County staff seek state clean-energy grant to add solar panels and battery storage to public health building

Thurston County staff on Tuesday asked the board to authorize acceptance of a Washington State Commerce clean energy grant to design and build a solar photovoltaic and battery storage system at the county public health building.
Rick Thomas, capital projects planning manager, said the county applied for and is prepared to accept a Commerce award that staff described as "just over $1.3 million" to fund both design and construction. "This funding would provide the funding needed for the design and the actual construction of this project. There's no fund match associated with this," Thomas said. The project would install rooftop solar panels and a battery storage system to supply some of the building's electrical needs.
Commissioners and staff praised the work that identified the project scope and sized costs so the grant request would be competitive. Staff said the building is county-owned and the grant award, if accepted, will be signed by the county manager and brought back to the board as required by county contracting rules.
The item is scheduled for action on the June 17 agenda; staff noted no local match is required and the project advances the county's facility resilience and sustainability goals.
