Commissioners rezone Yadkin River Park to Community Recreational district; park improvements cited

Davidson County commissioners voted June 9 to rezone Yadkin River Park property to the Community Recreational (CR) district, a designation county staff said reflects the park's established historical and passive‑recreation uses.
Planning staff described the park as a largely completed facility with walking trails, an historic 1926 Wilcox Bridge, a dog park and canoe/kayak access. Staff said the park draws substantial visitation and is nearing completion of an environmental center that will house a small museum, teaching space and kayak/canoe rental operations. "Approximately 700,000 people visit this park annually," county planning staff said in recommending approval.
The zoning change formalizes the park's recreational and historical uses on the county zoning map, county staff said, and aligns the park with the new Community Recreational district adopted earlier in April. Staff recommended approval on the grounds that the request is consistent with the county land‑development plan and that the change helps the public identify recreational assets geographically.
There were no public speakers against the rezoning at the meeting. The board adopted the rezoning and a statement of consistency with the county comprehensive plan. County staff said the park will continue to operate with planned amenities and that any future capital improvements will follow standard permitting and environmental review processes.
