Commissioners approve consolidation of Midway and Gumtree fire districts and endorse financing for Gumtree station

The Davidson County Board of Commissioners voted June 9 to consolidate the Midway and Gumtree fire and rescue service and response districts and to endorse financing for improvements at the Gumtree fire station.
County fire and emergency management staff presented the proposal and asked the board to adopt a resolution making the consolidation effective July 1, 2025. "On behalf of the Midway and Gumtree Fire and Rescue Departments, the Davidson County Fire Marshal's Office requests that the Davidson County Board of Commissioners consider the approval of the proposal to consolidate Midway and Gumtree Fire Service, insurance and response district by resolution with an effective date of 07/01/2025," a county fire official told the board.
Community questions at the public hearing focused on perceived effects on response times and station closings. Fire department leaders made on‑the‑record assurances that the consolidation would not close existing stations and described plans to add staff coverage. "We're not closing anything down. We're actually going to add some staffing. We're going to have 24 hour staffing at Gumtree," a fire chief said during the hearing, and added that GIS-based response-area adjustments would be used to align resources and improve response times.
The board then voted to approve the consolidation, adoption of the related resolution and to endorse the financing plan for Gumtree station improvements. County staff said consolidation will be followed by final mapping of service areas and reviews by insurance rating authorities; officials said an improved, coordinated response area could reduce insurance ratings over time but cautioned that reclassification timelines are set by the state review process.
County staff indicated that further implementation steps — including final service‑area maps and financing documents — would be presented to the board for signature and to proceed with the station upgrades and staffing changes.
