Board signals intent to bid health benefits for 2026–27; asks administrators to pursue broker procurement

Dr. Willie recommended the district bid its health coverage prior to making plan decisions for 2026–27 so the board and administration have market information. “It’s kind of a two-part thing. One is more timely: do you think more likely than not we’re gonna — it’s just a good idea to bid the whole thing out?” Dr. Willie said. The recommendation included giving the district’s consortium advance notice of the intent to seek bids.
Board members discussed broker arrangements. One board member noted that bidding coverage alone still requires a broker to run the procurement; administrators confirmed the district would need to procure broker services (Mercer currently acts as broker for SIP GKC). A board member said the district would likely need to request proposals both for coverage and for broker services if it intends to move away from the consortium.
Next steps Administrators said they will notify the consortium of the district’s intent to bid and will return the topic for fuller board discussion when all seven board members can attend in person. The board did not take a formal vote on any contract or broker at the workshop; the item was a request for direction.
