Public commenters urge support for high-school journalism, teachers press for contract progress

During the public comment portion of the June 10 meeting, two community speakers urged the board to support district educators and extracurricular programs.
Alumnus Cody Stedman recounted award-winning achievements by Saline High School journalism and yearbook programs and asked trustees to consider preserving or restoring courses and resources for student journalism. "I plead do not forget how high school journalism has affected this district and the state," Stedman said, citing recent awards and the role journalism plays in students' learning.
Parent Amy Tesselin spoke in support of Saline Area Schools teachers and raised compensation concerns. Tesselin said teachers had been without a contract for more than 155 days, noted the district had not provided raises in the past two years and urged the board to "figure this out" and support teachers. "Our teachers deserve better," she said.
Trustees acknowledged the comments but did not take immediate action during the meeting; a closed session later addressed collective bargaining under Open Meetings Act provisions. The board said negotiations would continue with the district's negotiating team; no public bargaining details were disclosed in open session.
