Chair Supervisor Walton moved to send the mayor's nomination of Gail Chen Strang to the Historic Preservation Commission (term ending 12/31/2028) to the full board with recommendation; Vice Chair Cheryl seconded the motion and the committee approved it without objection, with Member Mandelmann absent.
Gail Chen Strang introduced herself to the committee and outlined her architectural background and preservation experience, including work with the Ninth Circuit judiciary, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and a restoration and reuse project that reopened the Strand Theatre on Market Street. "Balancing preservation and growth is personal for me," Strang said, describing projects that required compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and seismic and accessibility upgrades in historic buildings.
The committee also moved to appoint LaJuana McAlpine to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) Public Authority, Seat 4 (term ending 03/01/2028). McAlpine, who identified herself as an IHSS worker of more than 15 years, told the committee she wanted to represent consumers and relay service-level concerns from providers and clients who prefer to remain at home rather than enter institutional care.
A third appointment — a hearing to consider one member for the Children's and Families First Commission — was continued to the call of the chair because the candidate was not present. The committee voted to continue the item without objection.
The committee's actions were procedural recommendations to the full Board of Supervisors; final confirmation of the Historic Preservation Commission and IHSS Public Authority nominees will occur at a later board meeting.
