Food-vendor says Pioneer Days fee hike is squeezing small operators

Jonathan Cobia told the council during the public forum that the city's vendor fee for Pioneer Days has risen sharply and that the increase is squeezing small food operators.
In 2023, Cobia said, each event location cost vendors $50; in 2024 and again this year the fee became $150 per location. "That's a 300% increase from 2023 to 2024," he said, and described how a typical vendor with $2,400 in sales could see net profit fall to roughly $400'$500 after fees, staffing and other event costs. He asked the council to consider lowering the fee, offering resident discounts, or offering a single all-day price for vendors who use both event locations.
Council members responded that staff would research the fee history, compare other cities, and discuss resident/nonresident discounts with the recreation and event teams. Council asked staff (Logan and others) to follow up with the vendor and return with options.
Council thanked Cobia and asked staff to include the vendor-fee review in their follow-up with event organizers; no policy change was decided at the meeting and council did not adopt a fee reduction that night.
