Committee approves contract for part-time attorney magistrate Joseph O'Connor

The Safety Committee on June 5 approved a contract to engage Joseph O'Connor as an attorney magistrate for the Eaton County District Court.
Amy Oetzel, the court administrator, told commissioners that O'Connor is a resident of Eaton County (a requirement for the position), earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and has been a member of the State Bar since 1995. The contract covers one full day of magistrate duty per week plus additional hours as scheduled by the district judges and some after-hours responsibilities.
Oetzel said the position will be contracted on an hourly basis with no county benefits. Historically the county's cost for a part-time magistrate (excluding benefits) had been about $50,000; she said the contracted arrangement for O'Connor will average about $18,000 per year.
The committee moved and approved the contract and was told O'Connor will attend the next full board meeting to introduce himself.
