Board hears policy committee and safety committee updates, including Safe Schools by Design review
Summary
The policy committee reviewed four district policies; the district safety committee reviewed the Safe Schools by Design Act, threat-assessment and reunification procedures and plans to update emergency response documents over the summer.
The Amherst Central School District board received reports from the policy committee and the district safety committee on recent policy revisions and safety planning.
At the policy committee meeting on April 28 the committee reviewed four policies: one new policy (33 11) reflecting changes in laws around notifications and three revised policies (34 21; 56 61; 12 10). The policy committee reported Policy 34 21 reverted wording to the previously approved 2020 version after federal changes, Policy 56 61 included changes to membership and building-level wellness teams and school meal language, and Policy 12 10 was revised to add the new student representative on the board of education.
The district safety committee reviewed workplace violence prevention forms, a full review of the Safe Schools by Design Act, and discussed inclusion of safety features in capital projects. Mr. Rampato provided a project update during the safety committee report. The committee also reviewed the threat-assessment process and an emergency response needs document; staff said that document will be updated over the summer and that training should be scheduled on the emergency responses.
Committee members spent additional time on senior reunification methods and broke into small groups to adapt reunification procedures to Amherst Central School District needs. Reunification planning will continue and the committee expects a detailed review in the fall.
No formal votes were taken on these policy or safety items during the board meeting; the reports were informational and will guide future committee and board action.
