Midvale community council reforms; city leaders promote mural festival

At the June 3 city council meeting a resident announced that the Midvale community council had recently reformed and invited residents to attend monthly meetings; the newly elected secretary said the group will focus on beautification, publicity and community service and that the full community council meets the last Wednesday of each month at the Ruth Van Tyler Library.
Council members and the mayor used their council reports to promote two weekend events: a mural festival on Saturday and a Pride/bridal festival on Sunday. Council members also noted a city-organized mural walk scheduled for the following Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning at City Hall, with free ice cream at the end of the walk.
Why it matters: the reconstituted community council is intended to increase resident-led volunteerism, neighborhood communication and coordination with city staff. City council members were explicit that elected officials may participate in community council activities but cannot serve on the executive committee under the community council's bylaws.
Public outreach: the community council secretary said they have formed a publicity committee and will coordinate with city staff to publish meeting dates and agendas; the next full meeting was announced for June 25 at Ruth Van Tyler Library. Council members encouraged attendance at the mural festival and other neighborhood events.
