The Jonesboro City Council approved an ordinance granting a private club permit for Abe's Place Incorporated to operate at the Village Commons in Jonesboro.
During commentary on Ordinance 25014, James Owen Hines addressed the council and urged caution, citing public-health statistics and recent news reports about violence linked to intoxication. "Alcohol causes a lot of problems," Hines said, citing a recent surgeon general's report he referenced and arguing for caution in licensing decisions.
Jim Lyons spoke in support of the application on behalf of Dr. Robert Abraham, whom Lyons identified as the proposed proprietor. "He is putting in a very nice restaurant. And, yes, he is going to serve alcohol, but it is not going to be part of the problem," Lyons said, urging the council to approve the permit.
After public comment the council voted; the mayor called for ballots and the presiding officer announced the ordinance carried.
