The mayor of the City of Waverly announced at the June 2 council meeting that he will not seek reelection, saying he and his wife plan to relocate outside Waverly to be closer to their only child and the child’s spouse, who are expecting a baby this fall.
"I will not seek reelection as your mayor," the mayor told the council, adding that serving as mayor has been "one of the greatest honors of my lifetime." He said he is making the announcement now because the campaign season begins after Memorial Day and encouraged anyone considering a run to begin preparations, including talking with family, assembling a campaign team and fundraising.
The mayor said the decision was difficult and framed it as a family choice to be closer to their child during the new addition to the family. He offered support to prospective candidates and expressed confidence in the community's future.
The announcement occurred during the mayoral remarks portion of the council meeting; no formal council action accompanied the statement. The mayor also asked the council to adjourn following his remarks and the meeting concluded by voice vote.
