City staff previews new local‑codes activity dashboard showing case counts by ward

City staff demonstrated a new Local Codes Activity Dashboard to the High Point Community Development Committee on June 3 that is intended to let the public and council members search and map local code enforcement cases and view basic case details and status.

Staff said the dashboard will let users filter by record type—public nuisance (PV), zoning violations (DV) and minimum housing (HV)—open dates and ward/district. For May 2025 staff reported 265 public‑nuisance cases (143 city‑initiated, 122 citizen complaints), 39 zoning complaints (24 city‑initiated, 15 citizen complaints) and 9 minimum‑housing complaints (1 city‑initiated, 8 citizen complaints). Staff showed how a user can select substandard housing, set an open‑date range (e.g., May 1 to present) and choose a ward to see case counts for that area.

In a live demonstration staff clicked a map popup to show a sample case record. The popup displayed address, record ID, case topic (for example, order to repair, repair/demolish, or 48‑hour order), case description, open and close dates, the case manager, owner/party cited and a corrected status showing whether staff had closed the case after the owner repaired violations.

Council members praised the ability to filter by ward and asked whether searches could be done by owner; staff said there is not an owner search in the current public version but described a forthcoming deeper search capability using an internal tool called "building blocks" that would allow staff to search by owner or whether a property is rental or owner‑occupied. Staff said the dashboard is not yet live and they sought committee input before publication.

Committee members indicated support and asked staff to proceed after any recommended changes.
