Public works staff said the conversion preserves existing infrastructure and avoids the higher cost of totally removing or re‑installing signal hardware; an estimated cost quoted in committee discussion was about $20,000 for the stretch and under $1,000 per sign for signage, excluding the city’s contingency for installation and spare parts retention. Council moved and approved the single-beacon proposal by roll call.
The Aldridge Avenue and South Clinton Street intersection was previously served by a rollout stop sign used during school drop-off; staff recommended and the council approved converting that temporary sign to a permanent four-way stop after continuing traffic and soccer-practice traffic made the temporary arrangement impractical.
On Destiny Drive, council voted to install a streetlight at a resident request. Staff reported the installation cost would be about $1,300 with a monthly operating cost around $8.87. Some council members argued the developer should have installed the light when the subdivision was built and questioned whether a single resident’s request should change city standards; others and the police chief said the location is dark at night and the light would improve safety near the ball fields.
Why it matters: the decisions alter traffic controls and street lighting in parts of Boone and will affect driver expectations, pedestrian crossings and maintenance responsibilities. Staff said one aim is to keep infrastructure available so the city can re-enable signals if traffic patterns change in the future.
