Ellis County allows fireworks discharge in unincorporated areas on set July dates and hours

The Ellis County Commission voted 3-0 on June 3 to permit the discharge of consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas of the county during the July dates and hours the county sets annually. The motion approved discharge during the county’s July dates between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m.
County staff explained the commission typically aligns the county’s permitted dates and hours with the City of Hays for consistent enforcement. ‘‘We usually try to... abide by the same dates and times that the City of Hays does just for the enforcement timepiece,’’ the county administrator said while presenting the agenda item. He also acknowledged public correspondence received about fireworks policy.
Commissioners emphasized safety and responsible use in their remarks. A commissioner moved and seconded the item and the motion passed 3-0.
The action applies only to unincorporated areas of Ellis County; city limits remain subject to municipal ordinance and separate enforcement.
