The Norwood Historical Commission voted unanimously on Thursday to request that the town manager put out to bid for a professional historic consultant to prepare a National Register of Historic Places nomination for Saint Gabriel’s Chapel in Highland Cemetery.
Chair Judith Howard told members that town meeting approved $24,000 for a historic consultant to pursue the National Register application. Howard described the National Register as an important designation and noted Norwood currently has only two entries on the register, compared with more in neighboring towns.
Commission members said the commission should work closely with the town procurement officer to ensure bid documents correctly reflect the scope and any restrictions associated with CPA or town procurement rules. Howard recommended inviting procurement officer Jason Adams to meet with the commission to align on the process for both the Moss House and Saint Gabriel’s Chapel nominations.
A motion to ask the town manager to put the Saint Gabriel’s Chapel National Register consultant contract out to bid was seconded and approved unanimously.
Next steps: The commission will coordinate with the town manager and procurement officer to prepare bid specifications and seek consultants experienced in National Register nominations.
