Sheriff's Department representative Mike Donato said the county will deploy four-officer teams plus a supervisor in four-hour blocks to conduct proactive patrols in Millville. He said the city will reimburse the county using its UEZ (urban enterprise zone) funding for those patrols. Donato described the arrangement as "proactive patrols, utilizing sheriff's officers and a supervisor" and said the teams will operate at various times and days throughout the week.
Commissioners praised the collaboration. Commissioner Victoria Lewis, who said she works at Millville High School, cited recent violent incidents in the city and said additional patrols are intended to help make downtown areas safer and support economic development. Several commissioners described the arrangement as a timely, cooperative measure while Millville continues efforts to staff its own force.
The resolution authorizing the agreement passed on a voice/roll call vote. The sheriff indicated the agreement is intended as a reimbursed, temporary support to address public-safety needs in Millville.
