Volunteers put flags on Gardiner cemeteries; council thanks organizers

Annie Cough, a Gardiner resident who coordinates placement of veterans' flags at local burial grounds, told the City Council on June 11, 2025 that volunteers placed flags at multiple cemeteries on May 22 and listed the volunteers who assisted.
Cough said she coordinates flag placement in "Kanad, Oak Grove, Old Saint Joseph, New Saint Joseph, and place it cemeteries" and read a list of volunteers by name who helped at Oak Grove on May 22. She said volunteers also marked sections in Oak Grove earlier in the week to guide crews and that Public Works staff brought additional flags. She noted that more flags had to be ordered and that they had now arrived. Cough closed with thanks to the volunteers and asked the public to thank helpers when they see them.
Council members thanked the volunteers during the meeting. Councillor Rusty Greenleaf, who represents Oak Grove Cemetery, specifically thanked Cough and the volunteers for the work and noted the effort is a "big undertaking." Other council members and the mayor also expressed appreciation and asked staff to pass along thanks to Public Works employees who assisted.
No formal council action was taken on the matter; it was presented as public comment and received council recognition.
