Laredo ISD reports parent‑engagement work, urges outreach to rebuild volunteer counts

Campos said fear related to immigration enforcement reduced some parents’ willingness to volunteer or attend classes, and staff worked to reassure families that campus programs are safe. During the presentation, Campos offered team‑level volunteer figures and semester session counts; the transcript contained several team‑level numbers that were unclear or inconsistent, but Campos cited an overall district total and differences by feeder team during the spring presentation. She also said many Parent Academy classes focus on social‑emotional learning and on practical topics such as attendance, state testing support and safety protocols.
Trustees and staff urged using recorded video outreach in English and Spanish to boost participation. Trustee Veronica Ordono recommended featuring Campos and parent liaisons on the district website and social channels so parents can hear from fellow parents; Campos and trustees also discussed the district’s vetting process for volunteers and a two‑ to four‑week clearance timeframe that human resources typically completes within about two weeks for coaches and other time‑sensitive volunteers.
Trustee Juan Ramirez and others urged more frequent briefings on vaping awareness and on emergency response and reunification protocols. Campos said the district already provides monthly campus sessions (required by federal standards) and that the Parent Academy delivered two vaping sessions in fall and two in spring; she and trustees discussed adding short, periodic reminders and videotaped safety briefings so parents understand standard response protocols and do not panic in emergencies.
Campos said the district’s parent liaison network and campus monitoring are active; she noted that volunteers must pass district clearance and that campuses monitor volunteer conduct and may remove volunteers whose behavior is inappropriate. Campos told the committee she and liaisons continue outreach to expand participation and that trustees’ visible attendance at events helps reinforce the program’s value to families.
