Leon County readies Apalachee Regional Park to host 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Leon County staff told the Board on June 10 that preparations for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park (ARP) are on schedule and recommended the board accept the status report and continue support.
Carrie Post, representing the Leon County Division of Tourism, said the event is scheduled for Jan. 10, 2026. She told commissioners the county expects about 550 elite athletes from more than 60 countries, roughly 10,000 spectators and an estimated $4.5 million in direct economic impact to the community. The board voted to accept staff’s recommendation.
Post said the event will be organized by a local organizing group (LOG) comprised of more than 100 local experts across 10 core teams and 34 work areas, covering medical, volunteer operations, spectator services, media, sustainability and other disciplines. She described a course designed to evoke Florida landscapes with six immersive elements and fan zones intended to boost spectator engagement.
Post outlined progress: more than 500 volunteers had already signed up, more than 100 county staff were directly involved, and six sponsors had been secured. She said ticketing, fun-run registration and merchandise sites would go live in the coming 30–60 days and that NBC would broadcast award ceremonies internationally. The county previously allocated $500,000 in tourism funds and will include additional tourism funding in the 2026 budget; staff said some expenditures will be offset by state and national partners and corporate sponsorships.
Commissioners asked logistical questions about volunteer needs, the fun runs aimed at multiple ages and opportunities for downtown hospitality events tied to the championships. Commissioners discussed the possibility of complementary downtown programming and hospitality for visiting delegations; staff said the official schedule is structured but indicated they would explore additional public events in downtown Tallahassee around the competition.
Why this matters: Hosting a global athletics championship brings international visibility, room nights and direct spending to local businesses and requires major cross-departmental coordination on operations, emergency services, marketing and sustainability. Staff said World Athletics has been complimentary of the county’s preparations.
What’s next: Staff and the LOG will finalize ticketing, volunteer assignments and sponsorships and return to the board as needed. The board approved the staff recommendation to accept the status report (option 1).
