Youth commission votes to continue subcommittees, cancel September meeting and request staff briefings

The Redondo Beach City Youth Commission approved recommendations from three active subcommittees and took calendar and staffing actions at its June meeting.

Communications: Commissioners voted to continue the communications subcommittee next year and recommended a written handoff for the incoming commission. The subcommittee proposed monthly social‑media posts, a designated member responsible for scheduling posts, and periodic spotlights on local businesses and school reposts to increase engagement. "Marketing is such a fundamental part of everything," one commissioner said, urging the panel to keep the social presence active.

Teen center: The teen‑center subcommittee advised that facility improvements should reflect feedback gathered at recent open‑house events and recommended programming focused on holiday events and reopening plans. Commissioners agreed the subcommittee should remain active at least one more year, “at least until the facility reopens,” and then be reevaluated.

Substance abuse: Separately from the moratorium recommendation (covered in a separate article), the substance‑abuse subcommittee recommended refocusing outreach to develop educational materials for public, youth‑oriented spaces (for example, pier and park locations). Commissioners suggested renaming the subcommittee to emphasize outreach or retailer control and recommended closer adult partnership for legal and policy guidance.

Calendar and staffing actions: The commission voted to cancel the regular September meeting, citing the summer recess and that both the chair and vice chair will be unavailable. Staff told commissioners they have 26 applications for next year’s commission and plan interviews later in the summer. Staff also said it plans a series of summer pop‑up teen programming events to build interest for the facility’s planned reopening in the fall.

Actions taken: The commission approved motions to (1) continue the communications subcommittee and package its recommendations for the incoming commission; (2) keep the teen‑center subcommittee active for another year and forward its facility‑improvement suggestions; (3) continue the substance‑abuse subcommittee with a focus on developing educational outreach materials; and (4) cancel the September meeting. All motions passed on voice votes.

What’s next: Staff will prepare written handoffs and a packet of materials for the incoming commission, schedule interviews for the 26 applicants, and circulate flyers for planned summer pop‑up teen events.
