Director Glover Brown reported progress across spring and fall athletics programs at the York City School District committee meeting on June 9.
Brown opened with participation and team-retention figures, saying this spring “when the kids came out, they stayed out this year,” and credited coaches and students for improved consistency. She highlighted the track team’s season, noting school records and state-level qualifiers: “The girls 4 by 1 team really showed themselves this year. They broke the school record again, going 48 2 in a 4 by 1,” Brown said. She added that several students advanced to district and state meets, and singled out one athlete who finished fifth at the state finals.
The baseball team finished with four wins — Brown described that as the first time in roughly a decade the program reached that mark — and she said softball players and cheer squads continued to participate despite competitive struggles.
Brown also updated the board on facilities that affect athletics. She reported a remaining drainage issue on one portion of the new turf but told the board the contractor had sealed the area and “we should have turf laid down in 2 weeks.” She said dugouts have been installed for baseball and softball and that the turf is expected to be ready for August open practice and early-season events. Brown said staff are working with the district’s general contractor and emphasized the contractor’s deadline obligations.
On fall sports recruitment and summer physicals, Brown said the district has already held a first session and will hold another on July 30; the district’s medical partner WellSpan is scheduled to perform physicals. Brown urged families to obtain physicals early and said information is posted on the district website and communicated through coaches and middle schools. She listed fall activities that require physicals: cheerleading, football, girls and boys soccer, and girls volleyball.
Board members thanked Brown for focusing on academics tied to athletics, reiterating the district’s policy that students must meet academic standards to participate. No formal action or votes were taken on athletics items during the committee.
Looking ahead, Brown said completion of the turf and related landscaping will be timed for practices and opening games; she emphasized ongoing work to establish both playing surfaces and the supporting infrastructure such as dugouts and grass growth in field areas.
Ending: Board members offered brief praise for coaches and student-athletes and had no questions beyond the reports; athletics matters will return to the board as construction and scheduling progress.
