Nurse honored for life‑saving response; students and teams win state and regional awards

Heroism award: Superintendent Terrence Lawson described a May 19 playground injury at Leeds Elementary in which a student, Gavin Gilbert, fell and sustained a severe open elbow wound. School nurse Aria Smith applied a tourniquet on the playground and stabilized the student until emergency medical services arrived; the student underwent surgery the same day. "Miss Smith is a hero for her actions on the part of Gavin," Dr. Lawson said as the board recognized her.
Athletics: Amy Sexton, program coordinator for Interscholastic Athletics, outlined spring athletic accomplishments. County highlights included 532 middle-school athletes, 900 high-school athletes and three state champions in track and field: Leanna Rogers (Northeast High School), state Class 2A girls 1,600-meter champion (time reported as 5:09), and Haley Dry (Northeast High School), state Class 2A girls discus champion (winning throw of 126 feet, 10 inches). Rising Sun High School's Unified Bocce Team A won their division state title; the team was recognized by name.
Career/technical and academic competitions: Dr. David Foye and Dr. Nicole Parr presented SkillsUSA winners (multiple gold, silver and bronze winners across CTE programs) and FFA public-speaking winners advancing to state competitions; the School of Technology and other schools were singled out for statewide medals. Envirothon teams from Rising Sun and the School of Technology placed among top teams in regional competitions and were recognized.
The board applauded all students and staff; certificates were presented to winners and coaches. No formal board action accompanied the recognitions.
