Board and community honor outgoing student member Giselle Griffin; state citation presented

At the June 11 meeting the Board of Education of Cecil County and members of the public paid tribute to outgoing student member of the board Giselle Griffin, who graduated from Perryville High School. Board members and community representatives praised Griffin's professionalism and advocacy during her year of service; Griffin spoke briefly and welcomed the newly appointed student member, Addison Metcalfe.

Jeremy Browning, director of the Maryland Commission on LGBTQIA+ Affairs (housed in the governor's Office of Community Initiatives), presented a governor's citation recognizing Griffin's "outstanding achievements and service to ensure all students can learn and grow in a more welcoming and inclusive environment." Browning read the citation text and noted that it was signed by Governor Wes Moore, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller and Secretary of State Susan Lee. Browning said he was "honored to recognize student member of the board, Giselle Griffin for her outstanding achievements and service."

Griffin, in her final board report, thanked the board for the opportunity to represent students and said she hoped her service highlighted the importance of student success and equity. Board members and association leaders offered gifts and best wishes; board president and superintendent participated in the recognition.

The board also welcomed incoming student member Addison Metcalfe, who was introduced at the meeting. No formal board action was required for the recognition itself.
