Northeast Middle–High School moves up construction schedule; county funds classrooms and road work

District facilities leaders and the superintendent provided a status update on the new Northeast Middle–High School and accompanying infrastructure at the June 11 meeting.
Dr. Terrence Lawson and facilities staff shared photographs and drawings showing three stories of steel work in place, the auditorium and the career and technology education wing. Dr. Lawson said the county executive had committed an additional $3,000,000 to finish 12 classroom shells behind the career and technical wing, and estimated Irishtown Road expansion would cost roughly $2,000,000.
"This is like phase A of the steel work, and they just moved the crane last week to begin phase B so that the structure will go up," Dr. Lawson said. He added that staff learned the former practice-field area contains decomposed fill material that must be removed and replaced with suitable fill; that work carries an estimated price tag "upwards about a half million dollars."
Facility leaders said the project timeline targets opening in roughly two school years. They also noted the county agreed to front-fund state dollars to keep the project on the accelerated schedule; the board approved county front funding of $11,606,000 in the FY26 capital budget.
The board's Educational Facilities Master Plan (EFMP) was presented for review; Dr. Joseph Buckley said the full EFMP (196 pages in BoardDocs) will be submitted to the state in July and that Thompson Estates and Cherry Hill elementaries are the district's next high priorities after the Northeast project.
Board members and staff discussed parking and site-preparation costs, the field-house opening at Perryville High School and the plan to finish arts and CTE spaces around the auditorium. No formal vote was required at this presentation; board members were invited to submit questions before final EFMP adoption in July.
