Animal Services staff said they increased the budget line for vaccine and medication by 25 percent to vaccinate animals on intake, noting some animals are vaccinated only once in their lifetime when they enter the shelter. The department also requested a transport van to maintain a foster program, extend adoption-center hours and improve outcomes for animals moved to partner rescues—staff said out-of-state rescues frequently require transport.
The presenter reported a recent criminal case concluded about two to three weeks before the meeting: the defendant was convicted on two counts and some animals on the property were declared county property. Staff said roughly 70 goats were taken into county custody, and most have been recovered; about 10 remained at the time of the presentation. Staff said the defendant received jail time and that any remaining animals would become the county’s responsibility until reclaimed, if at all.
Animal services also said it conducted more than 500 spay/neuter surgeries in the past year and that additional outreach and foster capacity would help reduce shelter populations.
