County awards $562,500 to San Bernardino for police drone training and platforms

San Bernardino County Supervisor Joe Baca presented the City of San Bernardino with a check for $562,500 at the June 4 council meeting to support the Police Department’s drone program, the county and city announced.
Supervisor Baca said the funds will be used for training, drone platforms and related data storage. “This will allow our police department here in San Bernardino to use these drones sometimes to subdue criminals,” Baca said during the presentation, adding that thermal sensors and other tools help officers locate people with reduced risk to staff.
City officials said the county grant requires a local match; the county official noted the city would provide an approximately 25 percent match. Police Chief Goodman and city leaders thanked Supervisor Baca and the Board of Supervisors for the assistance; the council and city staff also briefed the public on related county investments in public safety.
Supervisor Baca also noted related county investments in fire and emergency services, and said additional county support for fire hydrants and long‑range station planning remains under consideration.
