The San Bernardino City Council on June 4 approved a prioritized list of street segments for paving funded through the state SB1 program and local match. Councilmember Canas presented the selection and said the aim was to “connect the dots” so major corridors entering the city would have contiguous pavement.
Locations identified include Second Street from I‑215 to Arrowhead Avenue; University Parkway from State to Kendall (with council direction to extend to the Caltrans boundary south of Lee, to be formalized in an October 2025 revision); Baseline (completing paving between Mount Vernon and Paris Street); Waterman Avenue (linking to Caltrans work and paving south to Highland); and Highland from Eucalyptus to Robinson.
Public Works staff explained SB1 funding mechanics: the city’s annual SB1 allocation is approximately $5.7–$5.9 million, distributed monthly once programmed, and the city’s “proof of effort” or local maintenance‑of‑effort figures were described in the presentation. Council approved the list with instructions that staff return with the revised limits (including the University Parkway extension to meet Caltrans jurisdiction) and any minor additions the council requested, subject to funding and an October revision window.
The vote to approve the roadway list was unanimous. Council said the program responds to residents’ repeated requests for gateway and downtown arterial improvements and will be coordinated with other capital projects already under way.
