Middletown building committee confirms June 9 groundbreaking, mobilization June 2; budget and schedule updates

Project leaders said the middle-high school is progressing through bid buyout and scope review with multiple packages still to be bid, and that the project remains under active cost review before a guaranteed maximum price is set.
On budget and schedule: committee materials and presenters said the project remains within a $190,000,000 budget framework. The committee reported spending of just over $11.2 million to date and approximately $76.2 million in contracts executed (figures reported to the committee). Staff said the project-wide anticipated cost excluding contingencies is approximately $178,000,000, and that an owner allowance of about $12,300,000 remains to be allocated across remaining packages. A preliminary full-construction schedule will be provided at the next school building committee meeting; project representatives said the electrical package remains under review and that mobilization and the groundbreaking are not expected to materially change the overall schedule.
Project representatives cautioned that bid results vary by package and that some packages show favorable (under budget) results while others trend above the 60% construction-document estimates; they noted market conditions and subcontractor availability are influencing competitive pricing. Staff said they expect to generate GMP documents in coming months but still need to finalize RTA and contract approvals before inserting final values.
Logistics for the groundbreaking: staff said buses will bring selected students from Aquidneck and Forest schools and that music students will attend from the high school; the public is welcome and press releases and social-media notices will be issued. Committee members asked staff to ensure clear public messaging and site access guidance to avoid conflicts with other scheduled school events (the transcript records considerations about graduation and field use).
