Plan commission approves second drive-through lane, canopy and interior remodel for Culver’s on West Sunset

The Waukesha City Plan Commission on May 28 unanimously approved a final site plan and architectural review allowing Culver’s at 840 West Sunset Drive to add a second drive-through order station, a new canopy and interior remodeling.
Robin, a staff presenter, said the project will repave the existing parking lot, add a second drive-through lane on the north end of the property, add a canopy on the west side of the building and update signage and a mural. Staff recommended approval with standard conditions that all engineering, fire department, and water utility comments be addressed and that all signs be permitted per city code.
Fred Coles, who identified himself as the owner of the Compass on Sunset and said he is a neighbor, spoke to confirm the applicant intends to repave and restripe the lot and that operations are expected to continue during the work. Commissioners discussed queuing and circulation; staff and the applicant representatives said the two-lane drive-through will use a single inbound queue that splits into two order lanes, a configuration used at other fast-food sites. Alderman Dan Manion (District 7) commented that a mini median installed in a prior Sunset project has reduced some problematic cut-throughs and near-misses.
A motion to approve, subject to the listed department comments and permitting requirements, passed unanimously.
