San Antonio rolls out summer youth programs and a citywide heat-resilience plan

San Antonio city staff on May 28 presented the city’s coordinated summer youth programming and a citywide heat-resilience plan that pairs parks-and-recreation activities, libraries and human-services internships with a package of cooling, outreach and neighborhood interventions aimed at reducing heat exposure.

The presentation, given to the City Council during Session B, covered youth camps and activities running June through August, free swim lessons, police and fire department cohorts for teenagers, library summer programs and work-based internship opportunities; it also described a heat-resilience “playbook” and neighborhood pilot projects informed by UTSA research and outside philanthropic funding.

The city emphasized the public-facing tools staff has published online, including a map of cooling centers and program locations, and a communications campaign to reach residents in English and Spanish. Staff said the webpage lists hours and services at community centers, libraries and pools and provides guidance on recognizing heat-related illness.
