The Waukesha City Finance Committee unanimously approved a leased vehicle for a task force officer assigned to the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program, committee members said at their May 27 meeting.
Lieutenant Ian DeKarski of the Waukesha Police Department told the committee the HIDTA program currently funds the officer’s vehicle through grant reimbursement. "It would cost the city no money in the end," DeKarski said, describing the proposed lease as below the $6,000 annual allocation the city budgets for the vehicle (about $500 per month).
The committee asked whether the reimbursement came from federal or state sources; DeKarski replied the funding is federal. He said the officer’s prior three‑year lease is ending and the new lease would replace a Toyota Venza currently in use.
The chair moved to approve the lease and Alderperson Helvin Slaven seconded the motion. The committee took a voice vote and the item passed unanimously.
No timeline beyond the imminent lease renewal was specified in committee discussion, and DeKarski said he did not know how many years the city has participated in the HIDTA program.
The action was recorded as a motion to approve the HIDTA vehicle lease with the outcome approved by unanimous voice vote.
