State-supported VITA grants expand free tax-prep services; advocates urge continued funding

Jessica Achmoudi, policy director at the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CDM), told the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Economic Opportunity that state grant funding has allowed 17 grantees to expand Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across Michigan for the 2025 filing season.
"Free tax preparation services primarily offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program provide no cost tax filing assistance to low and moderate income households, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities," Achmoudi said, adding that VITA helps filers claim earned credits and avoids costs…
