The Howard County Board of Education opened its May 20 meeting with roll call, approved the agenda and later approved consent items and restricted consent by recorded roll calls, and recognized Hammond High School with the annual sportsmanship award.
A motion to approve the agenda was moved and seconded; the board recorded an 8-0 vote in favor. Recorded votes for the agenda approval included: Miss Mallow — yes; Miss Ricks — yes; Ms. Watts — yes; Mr. Abasiolo — yes; Ms. McCoy — yes; Dr. Chen — yes; Ms. Chamblee — yes; Ms. Mosley — yes. The chair announced, "Motion carries 8 0."
A restricted-consent motion later passed on a 7-0 roll call (Miss Mallow; Miss Ricks; Miss Watts; Ms. McCoy; Dr. Chen; Miss Chamblee; Miss Mosley — all recorded "Yes"). A subsequent consent-agenda motion passed 8-0 following roll call.
The board also heard the student member of the board report. The student member, James, said he certified the election of Aaron Alister as the next student member of the board and described plans to help that member transition into the role. James announced he would attend several upcoming graduation ceremonies and reflected on visits to elementary and high schools.
The board presented the annual sportsmanship award to Hammond High School. Principal Ramona Reed and athletics and activities manager Michael Celapata accepted the recognition. The meeting concluded with no additional formal actions taken during the reports and awards portion of the agenda.
