The Lawton City Council voted to direct the city manager to develop and implement a temporary roof-repair plan for the Museum of the Great Plains while permanent repairs are planned through the city's capital improvement program (CIP).
The item was brought by the mayor, who said the directive was prompted by recent heavy rains and public concern. "It's my understanding that the city manager, or the deputy city manager, had offered to repair the roof and it was declined, and then the big rains came, and then the ensuing Facebook stuff," the mayor said, asking the council to authorize city management to proceed with temporary repairs.
Council moved and seconded the directive. One councilor, Lynn, recorded an abstention during the vote; the motion otherwise carried.
The motion instructs the city manager to take temporary measures to protect the museum structure while the council considers permanent fixes funded through the CIP. The council did not specify a timeline or funding source for the temporary work beyond the directive that staff develop and implement a plan; staff and the city manager will report back to council with details.
