Northglenn proclaims National Gun Violence Awareness Day; highlights gun-safe rebate

Mayor Meredith Leidy proclaimed June 6, 2025, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Northglenn during the City Council—s special meeting on May 19, 2025, and invited Kathy Kelly of Moms Demand Action to accept the proclamation.

The proclamation notes national and state statistics on gun-related deaths and urges residents to participate in Wear Orange Day to honor victims and survivors. Kathy Kelly, who serves on the Wear Orange Committee of Colorado Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, thanked the council and urged residents to store firearms securely.

"In Colorado, it is now the law that in your home and in your car, you are required to keep your guns safely stored in a gun storage device," Kelly said. "So please make sure that you're doing that."

Council member Walker used council communications to remind residents that Northglenn offers a gun-safe rebate program. "I'd like to plug the city's gun safe rebate program, which will cover up to 35% of a gun safe that meets our requirements," Walker said, framing the rebate as part of the city's public-safety and injury-prevention work.

The proclamation text read at the meeting cites national and Colorado statistics and honors Hadiya Pendleton as the inspiration for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The item was presented as a ceremonial proclamation; no formal ordinance or budget action was taken at the meeting.
