ISD 622 awards 114 bilingual seals to 2025 graduates; 52 earned World Language Proficiency certificates

ISD 622 honored 114 graduating seniors who earned Minnesota bilingual seals, district staff said during a school board meeting presentation. The district said the students demonstrated proficiency in languages other than English and completed required English language arts credits to qualify.
Dr. Amy Lochner, who led the presentation, explained the state program. Minnesota schools may award a World Language Proficiency Certificate, a Gold Bilingual Seal or a Platinum Bilingual Seal to students who demonstrate proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing in a language other than English. District staff described the assessment as intensive and noted students may earn elective high‑school credits and, in some cases, college credits through the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
The district said Spanish was the most common language among recipients but that other languages earned by students this year included French, Hmong, Amharic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Oromo, Somali and Yoruba. Dr. Lochner said 52 students earned the World Language Proficiency Certificate this year and an additional group earned Gold and Platinum seals; staff read the names of Gold and Platinum recipients during the meeting.
District representatives said students who earn a seal receive a certificate and a pin to wear at graduation; the pins will be distributed with caps and gowns. The board and audience applauded recipients during a photo presentation.
Superintendent Chutio Sorio (as identified in the meeting) and board members congratulated the honorees and emphasized the district’s commitment to biliteracy and college readiness.
