WMSC concurs to expand automatic train operation to Green and Yellow lines after safety review; station overruns remain under scrutiny

Paul Smith, WMSC director of systems engineering, told commissioners the agency reviewed MetroRail responses to a May 5 set of specifications that included formalizing an ATO governance committee, a schedule to complete antenna normalization for the 7,000-series railcars and a plan to disable the cancel-station-stop button on railcars. "The WMSC reviewed these responses and found that WMATA had substantially complied with the safety certification requirements. This led to the WMSC's concurrence for activating ATO on green and yellow lines on May 20," Smith said.
