Henderson County board approves annual report on AI policy enforcement

The Henderson County Board of Education approved the district's annual report on enforcement of board policy 4.214 for artificial intelligence.

The report, presented to the board as required by policy 4.214, describes how the district will monitor AI use, evaluate vendors for data security and compliance, and incorporate acceptable-use and academic-integrity guidance into student and staff materials. "Last August, we were required by state law to adopt a policy for the use of our artificial intelligence in our school," said Mr. Beecham, a staff member who presented the report. "This is the senior board packet, the AI policy enforcement plan that we have in place, how we will monitor it, the data security vendors that look for the educational rights violations and to make sure that products we use meet the federal guidelines, acceptable use guidelines, verification of aid, outputs, and address academic integrity. This is 1 in our student's handbooks."

Board discussion focused on training, staff usage, and procedures for approving new AI programs. Mr. Beecham told the board the plan includes training for staff and consequences for use of unapproved AI programs. "We just need more approval for training and for a staff usage and also for an understanding of how programs are approved and the consequences of using unapproved AI," he said.

A motion to approve the AI policy enforcement report was made and seconded; the board approved the report by voice vote and the motion carried.

The approved report will be submitted by the director to the Department of Education in July as required by policy 4.214.

Board members did not record a roll-call tally during the AI report vote; the board used a voice vote to carry the motion.
