11-year-old honored by Manassas police for helping reunite lost child at regional 5K

The Manassas City Police Department presented a commendation to 11-year-old Ruby Rodriguez on June 9 for helping locate and reunite a lost child with her father during a Girls on the Run 5K in Loudoun County on May 17.
“Ruby acted immediately, ran over to the girl, and asked her if she needed any help,” Sergeant Brett Stump said while reading the department’s commendation. According to Stump, Ruby had been partnered with Sergeant Carrie Mello at the event; after running more than two miles and approaching the finish line, Ruby stopped when she spotted a young girl who appeared distressed and stayed with her until she was reunited with her parent.
The department said the event included more than 2,000 participants wearing matching shirts, which the department described as creating a stressful environment for a lost child. Sergeant Stump credited Ruby’s situational awareness, empathy and “quick action” for reuniting the family. Master Police Officer Anna Brown read a Spanish-language version of the commendation.
Ruby received a certificate, a small gift bag of police department items and a $50 Chick-fil-A gift card. Chief Keane commended Ruby as a role model and noted the department will continue outreach and safety education for youth participants at large events.
The commendation was presented during the council meeting’s proclamations segment; no formal action by the city council was required for the department’s recognition.
