The proclamation, presented at the June 9 special council meeting, recognizes the anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 and pledges continued support for women veterans in the city. “This plaque will serve as a lasting reminder of the women who have worn the uniform, stood the watch, and given their all in peace and in war,” Mayor Michelle Davis Younger said as she announced the plaque and the new advisory board.
The mayor also introduced the initial members of the Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Board and described plans for a veterans resource fair and a quarterly “fireside chat” series to share veterans’ stories. The mayor said the fair will assemble agencies and service providers to create a one-stop resource for veterans and their families.
Council staff and several veterans’ organization leaders joined the mayor in presenting proclamations and posing for photographs after the plaque unveiling. The plaque’s text, read aloud by the mayor, states in part: “In honor of women veterans…with deep gratitude and profound reverence…She served with honor. She continues to inspire.”
Those listed by the mayor as advisory board members or representatives included Jerry Martin (Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Board member), Wayne Moore (commander, VFW Post 7589), Stan Moore (American Legion Post 10, noted as not present), Larry Law Sr. (American Legion Post 114), Ed Ortiz (Commander, DAV Chapter 15), and Carlos Colate (American Legion Post 1799). The council did not take additional policy votes tied to the proclamation at the meeting.
The mayor said the advisory board and resource fair are initial steps and that the city will continue to develop supports, including outreach for homeless veterans and other needs identified by veterans’ services partners. No funding amount or implementation timeline for the advisory board’s programs was specified at the meeting.
The proclamation and plaque unveiling were ceremonial actions; Council did not adopt legislation associated with the recognition during the meeting. The mayor invited all women veterans present to be photographed with the plaque and announced the plaque will be permanently mounted in City Hall.
