The honor guard representatives said the organization provides recognition at funerals for nurses and is entirely volunteer-run and free to families. "We're really here because we wanna get the word out about what the Nurse Honor Guard is," said Vicky Mead, who introduced the group and identified herself as a Clyde resident and a nurse of about 40 years. Susan Luke, a retired nurse who said she worked 44½ years at a Fremont hospital, described elements of the Nightingale tribute: a white uniform or slacks-and-top, a Nightingale lamp presented to a family member, a roll call of nurses present and a three‑chime naming ritual to mark a nurse's release from duty.
Mead and Luke said the regional group covers five counties—Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Seneca and Sandusky—was formed in 2024 by Brenda Baker and currently has about 28 to 30 members who have conducted roughly 25 tributes. The presenters said the tribute typically lasts about 10 minutes, volunteers ask families for biographical details ahead of a service and there is no fee. "We are volunteers, and we give tribute at the end of a nurse's life," Mead said.
Council members responded with praise and thanks. Councilman Greg McMaster said he had no questions and thanked the group: "You would be hard pressed to find somebody that did not have their lives touched by a nurse." Councilman Chris Shea said, "Thank you for what you do." Vice Mayor Scott Black and Mayor Doug Macaulay offered similar remarks of appreciation.
Later in the meeting Councilman McMaster moved that the City of Clyde make a $500 donation to the North Ohio Lake Erie Nurse Honor Guard; Vice Mayor Black seconded the motion. The council approved the donation by roll call vote with all members recorded as voting aye.
The group asked that funeral homes and families be made aware of the honor guard so they can request the tribute when appropriate. Presenters said they are seeking additional members to reduce travel burdens across five counties and to expand local coverage.
The council did not direct staff to take further action beyond the donation vote.
