California State Parks to seek public input on Wildwood Canyon property classification June 16

California State Parks officials told the Yucaipa City Council on June 9 they will hold a public meeting on June 16 to begin classifying the agency’s Wildwood Canyon property and later prepare a general plan to guide use and management.
"This is an invitation not only to council, but to members of the public, next week, Monday, June 16, in the Yucaipa Community Center, the banquet room from 06:30 to 8, we'll be hosting a public meeting," said John Roy, the region’s superintendent for California State Parks. He noted the state acquired roughly 800–900 acres in the Wildwood Canyon area about 25 years ago and that community stakeholders led the acquisition.

Based on preliminary inventories, officials said the site likely will be classified either as a state park or as a historical park to reflect both natural resources and historical assets on the property.
What’s in the site: State Parks’ preliminary inventories list an historic ranch (the Hunt Ranch), multiuse trails used by equestrians, hikers and bikers, and interpretive opportunities. Roy said that while the property is not currently a designated "state park" unit, the classification and the general-plan process will define allowed uses, trail management and potential interpretive programming.
Next steps and public input: Officials said the classification decision will be followed by a general-plan process that requires public participation and ultimately the State Parks Recreation Commission’s approval. The public meeting is at the Yucaipa Community Center banquet room from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 16. Staff provided flyers and a QR code for more information.
